BSN Round 17 (Regular Season): Quebradillas beat Manati by two after a very close game

The most exciting game of round 17 in the BSN took place in Quebradillas. This derby game ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 5th ranked Osos (8-13) to sixth ranked Piratas (5-16) 87-85 on Saturday evening. Quebradillas looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. DR Congolese guard Emmanuel Mudiay (196-1996) orchestrated the victory by scoring 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. American-Italian forward Grant Basile (206-2000, college: Virginia Tech) contributed with 20 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Piratas' coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. American point guard Jameer Nelson Jr (185-2000, college: TCU) answered with 31 points and 4 assists for Manati. Quebradillas maintains sixth place with 5-16 record. Manati at the other side dropped to the fourth position with 13 games lost. They share it with Mayaguez. Quebradillas are looking forward to face league's second-placed Caguas on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Manati will play against Santurce and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Santeros (10-10) against sixth ranked Cangrejeros (9-12) on Saturday night. Host Santeros were defeated by Cangrejeros in Aguada 108-93. American forward Davon Jefferson (203-1986, college: USC) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and Angel Matias chipped in 18 points and 6 rebounds. Dominican Rigoberto Mendoza (191-1992) responded with 26 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Cangrejeros have a solid series of three victories in a row. Santurce moved-up to fifth place. Aguada at the other side keeps the third position with ten games lost. They share it with Guaynabo. Santurce will play against Manati (#6) on the road in the next round. Aguada will play against the league's leader San German and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
An interesting game for Criollos (12-8) which hosted in Caguas 4th placed Mets (10-10). Second ranked Criollos had an easy win 109-92. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Mets. Travis Trice II nailed 17 points and 9 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) for the winning side. Ismael Romero came up with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 10 rebounds for Guaynabo in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Caguas maintains second place with 12-8 record having seven points less than leader San German. Loser Mets dropped to the third position with ten games lost. They share it with Aguada. Caguas will meet at home Quebradillas (#6) in the next round. Guaynabo will play against Mayaguez and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 17: Ponce was beaten by San German on the road 84-68. Arecibo won against Mayaguez on its own court 95-85. Ponce unfortunately lost to Carolina in a road game 80-85.
The most impressive performance of 17th round was 20 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists by Darius Bazley of Ponce.




Caguas - Guaynabo 109-92

An interesting game for Criollos (12-8) which hosted in Caguas 4th placed Mets (10-10). Second ranked Criollos had an easy win 109-92. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Mets. Caguas made 21-of-23 free shots (91.3 percent) during the game. They shot the lights out from three sinking 16 long-distance shots on high 64.0 percentage. Caguas looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. American point guard Travis Trice II (183-1993, college: Michigan St.) nailed 17 points and 9 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) for the winning side and international power forward Alexander Kappos (208-1997, college: Dalhousie) accounted for 18 points and 5 rebounds. Five Criollos players scored in double figures. International center Ismael Romero (205-1991) came up with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 10 rebounds and American forward Torrey Craig (198-1990, college: USC Upstate) added 15 points and 4 assists respectively for Guaynabo in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Caguas maintains second place with 12-8 record having seven points less than leader San German. Loser Mets dropped to the third position with ten games lost. They share it with Aguada. Caguas will meet at home Quebradillas (#6) in the next round. San German - Ponce 84-68

No shocking result in a game when first ranked Atleticos (15-7) beat 5th ranked Leones (8-14) in San German 84-68 on Friday. The game without a history. San German led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Atleticos dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Leones' 30. They outrebounded Leones 40-29 including 29 on the defensive glass. Atleticos looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Guard Andre Curbelo (183-2001, college: Southern Miss) nailed a triple-double by scoring 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the winning side and American center Montrezl Harrell (203-1994, college: Louisville) accounted for 21 points and 10 rebounds. American forward Darius Bazley (206-2000) came up with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and the former international guard Jezreel De Jesus (185-1991) added 14 points respectively for Leones in the defeat. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. San German maintains first place with 15-7 record. Loser Leones keeps the fifth position with 14 games lost. San German will meet Aguada (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Ponce will have a break next round.

Brazilian-American center Tim Soares (211-1997, college: Master's) nailed 29 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side and Australian forward Jack McVeigh (203-1996, college: Nebraska) accounted for 18 points and 11 rebounds. Australian guard Nathan Sobey (190-1990, college: Wyoming) came up with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists and American center Thomas Robinson (203-1991, college: Kansas) added 13 points and 5 rebounds respectively for Mayaguez in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Arecibo maintains second place with 14-5 record behind leader San German. Mayaguez lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the fourth position with 13 games lost. They share it with Manati. Rather predictable result when third ranked Gigantes (12-9) won against 5th ranked Leones (8-14) in Carolina 85-80 on Sunday. Ponce was trailing by 6 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 19-13 charge of Carolina, which allowed them to win the game. Strangely Leones outrebounded Gigantes 44-32 including 30 on the defensive glass. Forward Dyondre Dominguez (203-2000, college: Arkansas St.) nailed a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winning side and the former international point guard Tremont Waters (180-1998, college: LSU, agency: Shark Sports Management) accounted for 24 points and 6 assists. Gigantes' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American forward Darius Bazley (206-2000) came up with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists and the other American import power forward Brady Manek (206-1998, college: UNC) added 17 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Leones in the defeat.
